Two upcoming shows at King Galleries in Scottsdale, Arizona, feature the artwork of Chris Youngblood and Jennifer Tafoya. Jennifer Tafoya “Ice Age” consists of new works in clay inspired by the prehistoric period in which most of the world was covered in ice. Tafoya’s latest collection of pottery—which is coil-built, stone-polished, incised and painted—include images of woolly mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, dire wolves and other animals of the Pleistocene era.

“Jennifer Tafoya is creative in her use of imagery on her pottery from throughout history. She captures motion and realism with exceptional skill,” says Charles King, owner of King Galleries. Tafoya adds, “Since the last show [where] we did dinosaurs was so much fun, [Charles and I] thought that a mammal group would be nice as well.”

In Chris Youngblood “Reflections: Work Inspired by Early Tafoya Family Designs and Shapes,” Youngblood has created five to six vessels inspired by the work of his great-grandmother Margaret Tafoya (1904-2001) and great-great grandmother Sarafina Tafoya (1863-1949). “I plan to reimagine these pieces in a carved style, [and] I hope to show new shapes. I plan to do some black, red and even tan pots. I am excited for next year’s show and plan to bring a collection of my best pieces to date,” says Youngblood.

King notes that the polychrome designs, shapes and colors of these past master potters are all used to inspire Youngblood’s present day work.
